There are many things to be liked from the GLA-Class, Mercedes-Benz entry-level SUV. Most Mercedes models have an inherent and somewhat staid sense of maturity, but the GLA isn’t afraid to let its hair down. It’s fun on a winding road, and the AMG GLA 45 version offers high performance with respectable fuel economy.
But the 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class is not without flaws. It has a narrow interior and rides more firmly than we expect from Mercedes. Although GLA-Class is certainly affordable by Mercedes-Benz standards, it’s still expensive compared to its rivals. It can be said, the high-performance AMG GLA 45 is much easier to forgive since it’s so much fun.
The 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class is a luxury crossover offered in three trim levels: GLA250, GLA250 4Matic, and AMG GLA 45.
The 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLA250 is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 208 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. A seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted shift paddles sent that power to the front wheel. The GLA250 4Matic comes standard with all-wheel drive and hill descent control.
In track testing, the 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLA250 4Matic went from 0 to 60 mph in 6.8 seconds, a good showing for this segment. The EPA fuel economy is quite good: the GLA250 rated at 27 mpg combined (24 city/33 highway), while the GLA250 4Matic stands at 26 mpg combined (23 city/31 highway).
The 2018 Mercedes-AMG GLA45 4Matic gets the same 2.0-liter engine but delivers an outstanding 375 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. A quicker-shifting version of the seven-speed transmission sends power to all four wheels.
In track testing, the 2018 AMG GLA45 went from 0 to 60 mph in 4.0 seconds with top speed of 167 mph. Fuel economy numbers at respectable 25 mpg combined (22 city/28 highway).
The 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class price list: GLA250 $34,395 (including destination), the 4Matic $36,395 and the AMG GLA45 $51,595.
