With new platforms and engines, the 2018 BMW 5 Series Hybrid reaffirms its foothold in the midsize luxury sedan segment. It distinguishes itself a few decades ago as a driver’s car and has since developed into a comfortable and sophisticated sedan. In doing so, the Series 5 exchanges some of the drivers’ properties for a more isolated feel. Since then, the BMW 5 Series has offered a near-perfect blend of performance, luxury and interior room.
The 2018 BMW 5 Series Hybrid is midsize luxury sedan sold in single trim levels.
The 2018 BMW 5 Series Hybrid 530e iPerformance plug-in hybrid is equipped with turbocharged, direct-injected 2.0-liter inline-four with an electric motor and a 9.2-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The 2018 BMW 5 Series Hybrid 530e will travel about 30 miles on electric power alone at speeds up to 87 mph. EPA-estimated 29 mpg combined when running on gas. BMW says charging takes three hours when plugged into a 240-volt outlet and less than five hours on a standard 120-volt wall socket. But it’s a hybrid, so total range is about 400 miles before you even have to think about charging.
